Sepsis still kills 1 in 5 people worldwide \u2013 two ICU physicians offer a new approach to stopping it<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to an article recently shared by The Conversation, sepsis is the leading killer of hospitalized patients in the United States. Although many people haven\u2019t heard of sepsis, it causes 1 in 5 deaths each year because certain signs of the serious medical emergency often go undetected.<\/p>\n

Traditional work to improve sepsis detection and treatment has targeted the hospital setting but has led to minimal progress in reducing the incidence of sepsis. Two critical care doctors and researchers, Emily Brant and Kristina E. Rudd with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, are working to spread awareness amongst scientists and doctors about how sepsis begins, how community factors make an impact, and how everyday people and health care workers can detect and stop this deadly disease.<\/p>\n

Sepsis is the body\u2019s extreme response to infection and occurs when immune cells in your body pivot from fighting an infection to attacking your own organs and tissues. Sepsis can cause the immune system to commonly injure the heart, lungs, kidneys, or other important body systems. This can cause inflammation in blood vessels and result in dangerously low blood pressure, septic shock and death. \u201cOnce shock develops, mortality from sepsis is estimated to jump from 10% to as high as 40%.\u201d<\/p>\n

Symptoms of sepsis vary amongst patients and nearly always require admission to the hospital, ICU, or require life support. After symptoms are detected and the source of the infection is identified, treatment consists of administering antibiotics and fluids or in surgical removal of the infected tissues or organs. \u201cDelaying sepsis treatment by even a few hours can have deadly consequences,\u201d according to the article.<\/p>\n

Dr. Brant and Dr. Rudd are examining community factors to enhance sepsis detection and better understand sepsis risk. In conjunction with researchers from Kaiser Permanente Northern California, they are working \u201cto advance sepsis care by studying sepsis patient symptoms, community factors, diagnosis and treatment patterns outside the hospital\u201d and also to \u201cimprove sepsis diagnosis among hospitalized patients.\u201d This collaboration will study patients from over 40 hospitals, 30 EMS agencies and many ambulatory clinics to help diagnose, treat and stop sepsis before it progresses too far.<\/p>\n
